Honors Intermediate Composition: ENGL 2089   (Spring 2024)

During the spring term of my second year, I also took an honors English course to fulfill one of my honors experiences. As an intermediate composition class, we worked through a series of engaging readings and had thoughtful discussion about literacy, genre, and discourse communities; and how they infiltrate nearly everything. We discussed “English” outside of the typical context of academia. For instance, think about how everything can be considered a genre. Now, can you write about one that speaks to you, that someone else might have not even considered  is a “genre” at all? This class prompted me to think outside of the box, and present my idea in a concise, interesting manner. Our class dissected the nuances of language and the ways in which we use it, and we delved into the cultural and societal impacts of language, too.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, our class went through readings and formed our ideas for our essays. With guidance from our amazing professor, Dr. Carlson, we improved our writing and creativity through peer reviews, constructive feedback, and independent research. Together, we created a safe environment and I always felt welcome to introduce my ideas and comments.

What I Learned & How I Was Impacted

This class was definitely one of my favorites from my journey at UC thus far. While I have always had an appreciation for creative writing, I always felt that I had a propensity more for scientific writing. However, ENGL 2089 used methodologies I was familiar with, such as gathering research/sources and including them, but more importantly, allowed me to write about whatever I wanted! I loved this newfound freedom. For example, our second essay revolved around genre, and I got to write about one of my most adored musical artists: Laufey. How cool is that?! I learned to lean into my interests more and allow myself to write about something I truly wanted to. Past English courses put students into a "box", only writing along a strict rubric for a good grade. But in my preparation for this class, I found it to be a nice break from my STEM--heavy coursework. I got to continue doing what I loved, research, but more about my personal enjoyments -- this was so refreshing as a neuro major! I made friends in the class and thoroughly enjoyed hearing everyone's perspectives. It was interesting to see that no matter your major, you can be a really incredible creative writer!
